How to: Install a monitor.
Solution:
Verify that the display unit and video adapter card match. Disconnect data and power cables. Switch display units and reconnect cables. Turn on display unit and computer and check for proper operation. Make settings changes as necessary.
CAUTION: Read the installation manual for special considerations that must be observed during installation, configuration and use of the new monitor. For example, the wrong resolution and frequency settings can damage a monitor or the video adapter card.
NOTE 1: The display unit and video adapter card (installed inside the computer) MUST match in type (e.g., EGA, VGA, SVGA) and resolution (e.g., 640 by 480). If upgrading display unit, upgrade the display card.
NOTE 2: The latest video monitors require bi-directional communications capabilities. This means that the video adapter card must be capable of bi-directional communications with the monitor and the drivers must be installed so that the bi-directional communications can be understood.
1) Make sure the new display unit matches the video adapter card capabilities.
2) Save work files, exit all applications and turn computer off.
3) (Optional) When installing a video adapter card, install it first.
4) (Optional) Disconnect the old video display unit from the computer.
a) Unplug display unit power cable from surge protector or wall socket.
b) Use a small flat-tip screwdriver to loosen screws that hold video data cable onto connector on back of computer.
c) Grasp the video cable plug and pull it straight out of the socket. Note the orientation of the plug to the socket.
CAUTION: Forcing it could damage connector pins or socket. Make sure the screws are completely loosened.
d) Move the old display unit from the desk.
5) Install the new video display monitor.
a) Carefully unpack the new display unit and remove all packing materials.
b) If display unit base is detached, position display unit upside down on desk or sturdy surface and install the display base (following accompanying assembly instructions).
c) Set the new display unit right-side up near the computer (make sure the cables will reach).
d) Connect the data cable to the video card socket on the back of the computer.
1] Locate the same 15-pin socket where the old video cable was removed.
2] Orient the plug so that it matches the socket (similar to the way old one was removed in Step 4) above.)
3] Insert the plug into the video card socket until it is firmly seated. If the plug does not fit, check the plug orientation (it fits only one way) and make sure the correct socket is being used.
4] Tighten the securing screws using the small flat-tip screwdriver.
5] If the video cable is not permanently attached to the display unit, attach it, repeating steps 5)a) through 5)d).
e) Plug the display unit power cable into both the display unit and the surge protector or wall.
f) Position the display unit (leave plenty of slack in cables for minor adjustments).
NOTE: Refer to the video monitor user's manual for special installation procedures.
6) Turn on the display unit. Verify that the operation light on display unit comes on. (If light does not come on, check power cable connections.)
7) Turn on the computer.
8) Watch the display unit for familiar information during the boot.
9) If display unit is on and nothing appears on the display, check the video cable.
10) Adjust the video controls (contrast, brightness, positioning) to the desired levels (consult the owner's manual for location and instructions).
11) (Optional) Install the video monitor drivers using the installation disk that came with the new monitor.
a) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
b) Select 'Settings' and select 'Control Panel'.
c) Double-click the 'Display' icon. (The 'Display Properties' dialog box.
d) Click the 'Settings' tab.
e) Click the 'Change Display Type' button. (The 'Change Display Type' dialog box displays.)
f) Click the 'Change...' button in the 'Monitor type' group. (The 'Select Device' dialog box appears.)
NOTE: If the currently installed device has a known compatible driver, the operating system may list the compatible drivers in a special 'Models' list box with the 'Show compatible devices' radio button selected. The currently installed driver is highlighted. If the currently installed driver is possibly damaged, the user may elect to highlight the compatible driver and install that one to overcome the driver problem.
g) (Optional) Click the 'Show all devices' radio button if the 'Select Device' dialog box has that option displayed. (The 'Manufacturers' and 'Models' list boxes are displayed.)
h) Install the video drivers using the available operating system drivers.
1] Click the UP ARROW and DOWN ARROR keys in the 'Manufacturers' list box and click the video monitor manufacturer's name to highlight it. (The 'Models' list box will display all of the models whose drivers are available.)
2] Click the UP ARROW and DOWN ARROR keys in the 'Models' list box and then click on the video monitor model name to highlight it. (Windows will install the driver for the model selected.)
i) Install the video drivers using the manufacturers installation disk.
1] Click 'Have Disk...'. (The 'Install From Disk' dialog box displays.)
2] Enter the drive specification for the drive containing the installation disk in the 'Copy Manufacturer's files from' box and click 'OK'. (Windows will run the installation program.)
